Regan is a vampire hunter. She prowls the night in search of her targets. Yet, she also hides a dangerous secret – she is a former vampire, who put herself through sheer torture to transform into a normal being.
The world as Regan knows it is full of creatures of the night – vampires, Nosferatus, weres. Humans are a dying breed, and disease and vermin runs rampant among the mortals. It is hard to find untainted blood to survive.
A prospective job brings her to The Vines, an upscale and hip bar which caters to the rich, the bold, and the beautiful. But appearances are deceptive, and the owner of the bar, who contacted her in the first place, wants her to investigate its goods’ supply. The twist – The Vines sells pure and coveted vintages, of blood. A series of disappearances, murders, and human traffic might be at the origins of this inflow of “produce”.
Regan does not have her work cut out for her, and when her head starts to spin with pure lust under the unabashed gaze of handsome bartender Garrett, she knows danger is dangling over her head like the sword.
I was captivated by the world Ms. Cory weaves. The setting, mood and characters are utterly realistic and believable, and it had me wondering whether the real world as we know it might not in fact be one rampant with creatures of the night. Her voice flows very well, and is witty and packed with allusions evocative of the mood and this make-believe world she has created. Ms. Cory also packs in action, suspense, as well as romance. Stirred into the pot are the erotic encounters of Regan and Garrett, and I swear these interludes will have any reader hot and bothered in a jiffy.
My only peeve is in the flow of the words, which is rendered quite run-on and jarring through somewhat erratic punctuation. It is however, a read I would highly recommend.
