Wynne Fredricks is a dispatcher for Chance City’s Police and Fire Departments. She’s handled kooky calls before, but one night, someone calls in under the guise of reporting a murder, and tells Wynne that someone has been killed, and to start counting down. A week later, another phone call and a dead gym manager with a number seven pinned on him turns up the heat. Wynne is placed into the protective custody of Brent Elliot.
While Wynne and Brent don’t get along, the sparks do fly, especially when body number six is found outside her work. When one of Wynne’s friends is kidnapped, she and her protectors form a plan that puts Wynne directly in front of the enemy.
Ms. McKay has put this story into a backdrop the reader can easily fall into, thereby making her world more believable. I was particularly amused by her description of George, who seems to embody every feline I’ve ever met.
While the plot was incredibly detailed and fast paced, I wished there was a little more information about Wynne as a person. There is little background and scenery information here, and it sticks out some.
Overall, Ms. McKay is an excellent writer who can suck you into her world and spin you topsy-turvy and set you right side up again so well that you’d swear it was all in your imagination. Or hers.

Murphy’s Law: Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.
Ever wondered who in the tarnation Murphy was? In Ms. McKay’s SOMETIMES MURPHY WINS, there’s a unique explanation.
Meet Trina Sackette, executive secretary to Cimmaron Resort. She’s a single work-aholic, much to the dismay of her long dead female relations Josie and Fina, and the delight of long gone Murphy himself, who enjoys ruining the sisters’ plans. When Trina loses a crown and accidentally knocks it down the drain, she calls management!
Enter Jarrett Marlin, resident apartment manager and mind-bogglingly hot. Trina can’t help the thoughts running through her mind. Nor can she help herself when she cries out – lisps, really - in passion, just when things were getting hot and heavy. While Josie and Fina work to set more suitable men in their descendant’s path, Murphy decides to twist things upside down.
Ms. McKay has done well for herself. She injects comedy into this storyline and keeps it coming. I have to note the hot interlude between Trina and Jarrett while she was still missing a tooth. I had to laugh! The whole scene was totally believable. I do wish Ms. McKay had drawn the story out more and given us more insight into the lives of her characters. That, in my opinion, is the only flaw to this wonderful story.
Totally awesome!

In past times, people put candles in their windows at Christmas. In A CANDLE IN THE WINDOW, Ms. McKay gives us a vivid tale that may give us pause when it comes to the Yuletide season.
Shelby Lassen has to pack up her Grandmother’s cabin and get it ready to sell after the great lady dies of a heart attack. When local handyman Chris Elleson shows up to repair a few things, Shelby shivers, but not from the cold!
Though Christmas is a little ways past, Shelby finds the seasonal spirit giving her a little push. In the attic, she finds a box of Christmas decorations that holds a special gift for her from her Grandmother.
Without fully understanding the reason, Shelby lights the beautiful candle she was given and places it in a window. For two nights in a row, Shelby lights the candle, and for two nights in a row, she receives two amazing visits.
Ms. McKay is gifted. This book kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. The plot was fantastic, with the old ideas being developed with new concepts. The interaction between her characters is very real. You can understand Shelby’s frustration, longing and joy, and more importantly, you can feel it.
All in all, an excellent short story that will warm the heart on even the coldest winter night. Awesome!
